Great Places to Take Your Difficult-to-Please Teenager
Today’s post is courtesy of our friends over at Globalista. A great topic, thanks guys!
Taking small children on holiday can be a hassle but the frustrations usually arise from the fusses and practicalities of planning for little ones, rather than resistance from the children themselves. That all changes as they veer into teendom, when suddenly the idea of going on a family holiday with their parents just doesn’t cut it. It’s natural but how can you combat the lethargy and get them excited at the prospect of a holiday with you? At Globalista we’ve put together a list of bonding boltholes that we think are likely to keep even the most difficult-to-please of teenagers satisfied:

Glaciers in Patagonia
- One of our top choices is Reykjavik. The endless light that revitalises the city from May-August makes summer the perfect time to visit. Active teens will revel in the hiking, horse riding, fishing and diving.
- Strange yet beautiful, Santa Fe has it all; American spiritualism, folk art, a cooking school, white water rafting, route 66 and the great outdoors. America is always considered thrilling and the relative obscurity of Santa Fe (to school children at least) might be a plus point.
- Dublin – the Guinness factory, shopping on Grafton Street and Temple Bar. Groovy.
- Take more sensitive souls to Arles, for the photography fair which started on 7th July and continues for three months. Follow it up with a mini tour of wild, stylish Provence.
- Berlin is celebrating 20 years of being reunited. The party began in June and continues through to November with all manner of light installations, exhibitions and events. Thrill them with tales about one of the coolest, and most youthful cities in Europe (you may want to omit the stuff about its legendary clubbing scene).
- We know you don’t want to spoil them but Monaco, with its extravagant yachts, casinos and super rich playboys, is every teenagers fantasy.
- New Orleans – from spicy seafood gumbo to jazz, blues and boogie-woogie legends playing nightly, there’s no better place to live it up.
- Explore glaciers, learn fly-fishing, kayak and spot whales in rugged Patagonia. This really is the trip of a lifetime however old you are.
- If you’d prefer to stay closer to home why not go on a road trip? Our new guide to Cornwall shows you where the young fun crowd like to be. Surfing, beaches, and you can even take the family dog too.
- And of course, there’s Barcelona, full of fun restaurants, funky shopping, some great beaches and for the art students, all the surrealism of Gaudi.

Reykjavik is amazing. There’s also dirt-biking on the volcanic ash, Whale watching with some show-off dolphins and a trip to the Northern Lights (perhaps not at this time of year though!)
For any teenager, the sheer beauty of the locals wil be a welcome distraction too.
