Great Wine & Sunshine: California’s Livermore Valley

May 10, 2009by Andy Hayes

It is no surprise that I love a good glass of vino. And combined with a passion for travel, for me nothing beats a day spent scouting out new territory for good wine. While I love the casual and relaxed atmosphere of Hunter Valley, or even the cosmopolitan chic of Napa, there is one place in the world that has some of the best wine in the most charming atmosphere: Livermore Valley

Livermore is just over an hour east of San Francisco, over a set of mountains that give the valley a distinct microclimate suitable for wine growing. 40 years ago, Livermore was producing the same amount of wine that Napa valley was. Today, while Napa is a bustling wine metropolis, Livermore is a quiet sibling hanging out in the background. But that’s ok with me, because I think some of the best wines are here. The area is known for its Petite Syrah, so be sure to try this anywhere you go. My favourite winery would have to be Rios Lovell, some of the tastiest Cabernet Sauvignon you’ll ever find – buttery, rich, sweet on the lips but it is all grape down the throat. I would ship it boats of it here to the UK if I could afford it. Another great stop is ConCannon, a more prolific producer but just as tasty.

You can visit the valley easily on a day trip from San Francisco – keep in mind it is typically far warmer here than in the city. It is worth exploring an overnight stay here, especially if you want to maximise your time out in the vineyards. There’s even some sightseeing in Livermore itself, such as the Centennial Light Bulb, the world’s longest burning light bulb. As well, a stunning modern library opened in 2004, complete with a beautiful and detailed mosaic. Some of the wineries also host live music events throughout the summer. Don’t forget the parks, hiking, and biking that can be had. For me though, just hanging out in the sun, relaxing with a picnic lunch and a glass of wine is more than enough. Soak up those rays and let your muse inspire you.
