Photo Essay: Statues

November 18, 2009by Andy Hayes

Everyone knows about the world’s classic and iconic statues: Mount Rushmore in America, the Statue of Liberty in New York, The Thinking Man in Paris, The Little Mermaid in Denmark, The Terra Cotta Warriors of Xi’an China, or Manneken Pis in Brussels. But how about some of these more off-beat yet still inspiring statues you can find elsewhere?

Budapest Hungary

This is one of the statues from the Statue Park in Budapest, Hungary.  It’s one of the most amazing things to see in Hungary – old statues from the communist era that have been saved.

Cliff Divers in Acapulco

This gorgeous statue is in deference to the La Quebrada Cliff Divers in Acapulco, Mexico

Slovenian Dragon

When you go to the Slovenian capital of Ljubljana, you can’t miss these dragons who watch guard over the city.

Buddha in Leshan

I love this photo as it gives a great perspective over the size of this immense Buddha in Leshan, China (note the tiny people in the upper left hand corner).

Four Musicians of Bremen

These are the charming Four Musicians of Bremen, Germany – one of the most popular things to see in Bremen!

Head of Lenin

Wow – check out this bust of Lenin in Buryatia, Russia – the largest bust of Lenin in the world!

Lion of Babylon

The Tower of Babylon might be gone, but we still have this statue of the Lion of Babylon in Iraq.

Statue in Florence

This lone gunman is a missed sight amongst the other gorgeous statues in Florence, Italy

Washington DC Statue

An amazing statue in the Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden in Washington D.C., America

The Lobster of Kingston

You’ll know you are in Kingston, Australia when you see this massive… Lobster.  Yum.

Rights of Spring

The Rights of Spring – a gorgeous artwork in Atlanta, Georgia, America.

Alexander the Great

This statue of Alexander the Great in Tajikistan is absolutely gorgeous.

Avila Spain

We close with this stunning shot from an exhibition in Avila, Spain

Did we miss your favourite off-beat statue?  Weigh in down in the comments.

Dave and Deb

These are awesome. We are so seeking out that Buddha while we are in China. Amazing. Such a great idea for a photo essay.

These are absolutely stunning Andy! One of my favorite things about traveling is finding those things that everyone else hasn’t seen, and statues are no exception! Some of my favorite statues around the world have been the ones right next to the famous ones that everyone else is huddled around.

I really enjoy the Wind Comb in San Sebastian (yes of course I’m promoting my own city!) ;)

Great photos! I love the last one – it looks sorta like a depressed troll!

@D&D – Thanks. I’m glad you liked it :-)

@Joanna – You know, you’re right. I hadn’t look at it that way but yes, there are some great finds just under your nose.

@Alex – Oops. I forgot about the Wind Comb. (And shameless home town promotion is always OK at STE!)

@Nick – Nice to see you here at STE :) I think the last guy is just sad. Maybe he could use a glass of Spanish wine.
