Secrets of Scotland

January 14, 2009by Andy Hayes

Still not convinced that Scotland (the world’s best small country) is the place to be? Well, I’ve got a secret with you. Or maybe a few of them…

Secret Scotland is a new holiday planning service, and I’m absolutely in love with the concept. For a nation full of strange and intriguing history (Rosslyn Chapel? The Ghosts of Edinburgh?), this is the perfect way to find that new, different, and exciting attraction for your next Scottish getaway.

On the site, you can browse tours by theme (whisky or romantic, for example) or duration (e.g. 3 to 5 days, 9 to 11 days).

If you can’t find something that suits, they’ll even do a customised Scotland tour for you. I plan on checking out this option in the near future and will report back.

I spoke with Mike at Secret Scotland to find out a little bit more about the research that went into developing these guides, and it sounds like no stone was left unturned in the search for perfect destinations. However, I had to laugh to hear that the real character of the Scottish people also made itself known, as Mike mentions:

We have visited a large number of B&Bs and have met quite a few characters along the way that would make a story in itself. Some of the B&Bs that didn’t make it into our guides include a lady on Skye who would only serve eggs fried (regardless of what guests asked for) and a sweet old lady who collected “road kill” squirrels for stuffing by a Taxidermist friend. Not so bad until you realize that she kept the squirrels awaiting stuffing in her freezer!

If that’s not enough of an travel adventure for you, I’m not sure what is.

Secrets of Scotland is offering a free download to Sharing Experiences readers – Scotland’s 12 Most Memorable B&B’s. You’ll have to give them your email address to login, but like me, they hate spam, so don’t worry about that.

Visit Scotland is definitely on our list of places. I’ve been a couple of times, but Raul’s never seen it and I think it’s a must for sure! Especially the Orkneys in early to late July with the late night sun.

Be sure to spend plenty of time in Edinburgh :-) And you might want to have a “wee stop” and see if you can find Nessie in Loch Ness….
