Colorado: America’s Back Yard

May 25th, 2010 by Andy Hayes

Inside this month’s travel newsletter, we talked about all of the great American cities that are worth a visit for the summer. But there’s a whole state that is a must-see, especially during summer.  Colorado sightseeing is a joy, and the state has so many different experiences for you to try.  The local saying is that people come for the skiing and stay for the summers – though this was said to me by a friend who moved there and never came back, so…. Anyway, whether it’s beer or hiking or just enjoying the fresh air, Colorado is great.  Here are a few of my personal faves.

Interlaken: Overhyped or Underappreciated?

January 11th, 2010 by Andy Hayes

Switzerland is known for many things: Europe’s most gorgeous mountains and peaks, hidden bank accounts and expensive travel.  One of my favourite places in Switzerland is Interlaken.  It’s not exactly a travel writer’s secret; one only has to look at the hordes of Asian and American tourists piling onto the “express” train that takes you to Europe’s highest railway station, Jungfraujoch.

Interlaken Railway Station

But in fact, I think the whole region is really under appreciated.  I spent quite a bit of time there and couldn’t believe how enjoyable the place was – and despite all the tourists, I actually found myself alone on quiet trails or enjoying relaxing cafe terraces.  Here’s a few of the things I found most enjoyable and suggestions for how you can enjoy a stay of any length (or in fact any season – there are things to do in Interlaken year-round) in this little Swiss hangout.  I’ll be skipping the highest railway station and instead headed for quieter and more enjoyable places.  Here’s my travel more Interlaken story.

Note:  When you arrive in Interlaken, make sure you get a map – or print one out, such as this one.  The area is connected by a series of gondolas, trains, and buses.  This is the high Alps here, so sometimes the routes are circuitous.  That’s part of the fun.

Basking in the Basque Country

October 25th, 2009 by Andy Hayes

They say a lot of things about the Basque Country in the northeast corner of Spain.  For one, it always rains – but I was very lucky with the weather.  The other is a stern reminder that you are not in Spain, but in the Basque Country – a different place entirely.  And that, my friends, I can definitely agree with.  How is it different?  Oh, let me count the ways.

Gran Canaria: An Island for Everyone

September 22nd, 2009 by Alex Fayle

Before going to the Maspalomas region of Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands , I had the idea that the island was going to be a typical tourist trap – nothing but hotels, resorts and places for people to waste their money on food, drink, and ugly souvenirs.

And in a way, I was right. All that stuff is there, but the island offers so much more, from breathtaking vistas to fascinating historical landmarks, from sun-baked beaches to jam-packed nightclubs and from family-oriented theme parks to family-friendly resorts.

All this in an island that’s 50km in diameter.

Top Five Things To Do in Costa Rica

July 21st, 2009 by Marina Villatoro
Where else in the world can you see an active volcano with a nightly lava show, visit a national park where monkeys and other wildlife creatures welcome you with open arms, and that has over 800 miles of amazing coastline? Costa Rica!

This tiny country, known to have 5% of the world’s bio diversity, has so much to offer the you’ll be wishing you simply moved here! I did:)

Top Five Must Do’s When Visiting Costa Rica

1. Volcano Arenal – Every day and every night this magnificent volcano spews out lava that calmly flows off the side of it. You can safely do the volcano walk to witness this phenomena for yourself. Or, why don’t you just hang out in any of the naturally heated hot springs at the base watching it with a cocktail in hand?

Prolific Travels and Insightful Thoughts from Mark Moxon

June 25th, 2009 by Andy Hayes

Today’s Thursday interview is with the prolific travel writer Mark Moxon. If you thought I wrote a lot, think again – Mark’s been around the earth and back, and wrote down every last second of the journey. He’s got a way with words, so I’ll shut up and let him take the stage. And with that….

First of all could you please introduce yourself?

Well, let’s see… my name is Mark, I’m 38, and I live in west London with my fiancé, an iMac and a suitcase of memories from far-flung places. I first went travelling in 1995, when I quit the rat race for a gap year that ended up lasting for three years, and that’s where I learned to be a travel writer, out there on the road. I’m just as fascinated by technology as travelling, which is why I choose to pay for my travels by working as a freelance web developer – it pays more, to be brutal – and between contracts I take time off to generate more memories for the suitcase. And sometimes I pop open the catch, fish around inside and stick the results on my website Mark Moxon’s Travel Writing, where people seem to enjoy reading them.

Slowing Down Time In Campbeltown, Scotland

April 19th, 2009 by Andy Hayes

“The long and winding road that leads to your door / Will never disappear, / I’ve seen that road before it always leads me here, / Leads me to your door.”

The Beatles, The Long and Winding Road

As has been mentioned on this blog many a time before, Scotland is an inspirational, magical place. From being the World’s Best Small Country to a stunning photo backdrop, it is a traveller’s paradise. But there’s one special place I found that’s even more inspirational than the rest of Scotland. It’s difficult to get to, and if it were not for a tiny strip of land connecting it to the mainland, it would be another island. But Campbeltown feels like an island anyway – it’s a world of its own.

A Photo Tour of my Favourite Country, New Zealand

March 30th, 2009 by Andy Hayes

As I mentioned in Friday’s post about travel community, I’m enjoying some great interactions on Twitter. So when Tourism New Zealand said hello, I declared my Twitterverse complete! New Zealand, as most of you know (or if you don’t, now you do) that NZ is my absolute favourite country in the whole world. If there would be only one place in the world to go and get inspired, this would be it. I thought instead of droning on with more lists and words about how amazing it is, I thought a small photo tour might be more fun instead. They say pictures speak a thousand words, and these are certainly no exceptions. We’ll be essential taking a circle tour of the South Island of New Zealand, as illustrated in this Google Map:

So, let’s go, shall we?

Scotland’s Waterfall Walk

February 4th, 2009 by Andy Hayes

I have been wanting to do this walk for ages. And last Saturday – a crisp sparkling day with blue skies as far as the eye could see – I finally made it. My destination: the Falls of Clyde Walkway, but I prefer the term Scotland’s Waterfall Walk.
