Thanks everybody for your great comments. My interest in Taiwan started years ago during the graduation party for one of my graduate students. Like all the Taiwanese I met, she is very polite, and quietly suggested I should think about visiting her country. It took a couple of decades, but I am glad I eventually listened to her advice.

I'm so glad you posted this. I too think Taiwan is vastly underrated as a travel destination. I stopped there on suggestion from a friend a few years ago and was surprised at just how beautiful it was.

I actually wrote up a blog post recently with 16 great things to do there, including the Sun Moon Lake and Taroko Gorge suggestions. But also things like taking in a baseball game, riding the high speed rail, teaching English, and just shopping in Taipei.

Thanks for the great spotlight.

Great article promoting tourism to Taiwan! I think it's one of the most underrated travel destinations in Asia. I've been living there about 8 months and every new day is like a brand new adventure. There is so much to see just in Taipei that 8 days is definitely not enough.

I see by the photos it looks like you enjoyed some of the culinary treasures on Yongkang Street, including the historic Danzai noodles. Sadly one of Yongkang staples (Ice Monster Shaved Ice) has recently closed - hoping for a new location soon! The food offerings in Taipei certainly do a number on the waistline, but oh so worth it.

I have not mustered the guts to try the stinky tofu although it seems to be everywhere. One step inside the Shilin Night Market food building and the smell is overwhelming (probably why I haven't found the courage to try yet).

The east coast of the island (especially Taroko Gorge) is definitely a must see. The beautiful turquoise waters and rugged coastline make for a very scenic drive on the way to the Gorge. Some of the island's east coastline offers scenery not too far behind some areas in French Polynesia, IMO.

Another sight to check out on a future trip is the Yehliu Geopark on the north coast. The unique rock formations must be experienced in person and has probably become one of my favorite places on the island.
